Root canal treatment is a beneficial way of restoring the health and function of a decayed or damaged tooth. However, that’s only the case if you properly recover. If you fail to take the recovery period seriously, then you could suffer consequences and delay healing. So, our dentist, Dr. Bruce Howard, encourages you to do all you can to properly recover. To help you do so, he recommends doing the following things:

-Manage your pain: Your mouth will be numb after your appointment, but it won’t last forever. When the numbness wears away, you might feel sore in the treated area. This is to be expected. Make sure to take the medications your dentist recommends as well as follow your dentist’s instructions. You can also use an ice pack in 20-minute intervals to reduce pain and swelling.

-Clean the area: It’s best to keep the surgical site clean and free of infection by brushing twice a day and flossing once a day. You can also rinse with alcohol-free mouthwash if you desire.

-Schedule your dental crown appointment: Usually, a dental crown is needed after treatment to give the tooth the support it needs. So, to restore full health and function to the tooth quickly, schedule your dental crown treatment as soon as possible. Until your appointment, it’s best to avoid using the treated tooth as much as you can.
